September 11, 2001, is often cited by veterans and first responders as a pivotal moment in their lives. For many, the tragic events of that day are akin to a generational Pearl Harbor, a moment that etched itself into their memory and redirected their lives.
Chief Joe Babkiewicz of the Bluffton Police Department, was moved by the heroism he witnessed on that fateful day, recalls his decision to join the police force.
“I responded down to Ground Zero the day after it happened,” said Babkiewicz. “Seeing firefighters and law enforcement officers running to the towers to help inspired me to serve others for the rest of my life.”
