U.S. Congressman John Moolenaar presented three military medals to Midland veteran Carl Zupic on Monday, about 70 years after he was discharged from the military.
Zupic, who turned 97 years old in May, was presented the the World War II Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal and Japan Clasp, and the Honorable Service Lapel Button.
Zupic enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1946 and was stationed in Japan as part of the American occupation following World War II.
"You really played a key role as we transitioned and now Japan is one of our best allies. The work you did laid the groundwork from a country attacking our nation to right now where that country is an ally," Moolenaar said to Zupic.
