Dozens attend funeral for Korean War veteran with no known family

Monday morning in Thayer County, a funeral was held for a Nebraska man who served his country. It’s where dozens of veterans came together, to remember his life.

Robert Mento died on Jan. 10 at the age of 86 in Beatrice. In preparation for his service, the funeral home couldn’t track down any living friends or family. So, a local legion post and VFW took over, to make sure Robert wasn’t buried alone.

Robert was an Air Force veteran, but other than his time in the military not much is known about him and his life.

“We know he was in Korea during the war. And that is about all we know,” said David Bruns, American Legion Post 24 Commander.
